When Captain Norm isn’t out filming, he is an active charter boat skipper working on his own boat off the Kona Coast of Hawaii, and at certain times of the year can be found taking in some of the world’s other hot fishing spots such as Midway & Australia.

Growing up a freshwater fishing enthusiast, Captain Norm evolved into an obsessive bass fanatic. He chased around the bass tournaments until he was severely bitten by the big game bug during the late 60’s while fishing with his dad and his brother off the South Texas coast. Settling in South Padre Island, Texas, Norm skippered offshore trips until the lure of the big fish off Hawaii’s famous Kona Coast caused him to move his charter operation there in the early 80’s, fishing Kona some 225 days a year ever since.

Over the years, Captain Norm has racked up an impressive record of more than 30 wins and placings in Hawaii’s fishing tournaments and has been written up both nationally and internationally numerous times for some of his notable catches and innovative ideas pertaining to offshore fishing. He is also a published writer with monthly articles appearing in a variety of publications ranging from SportFishing, Marlin magazines and Hawaii Fishing News to ESPN.com and BigGameFishingTheWorld.com.

Living his dream to sail around the world is an extraordinary accomplishment considering the extensive injuries Harker suffered in a 1977 hang gliding accident. Outdoor Life Network’s series “The 20 Most Courageous” profiled Harker in 2004 for his bold exploits pioneering the sport of hang gliding in the 1960’s and 70’s. In 1977 he fell from a height of nearly 400 feet, breaking over 30 bones and putting him in a coma for 11 months. Despite predictions that he would never leave a wheelchair, intense determination pushed him through an aggressive recovery program eventually allowing him to walk and hang glide again.

At age 52, and with very little sailing experience, Harker bought a boat and completed the 2000 Ha-Ha. 18 months later, he singlehanded across the Atlantic, and during the next 20 months cruised 24,000 miles between Miami and Malta, Malta and the Marquesas, and the Marquesas and his home in Manhattan Beach – much of it singlehanded. In this podcast Harker discusses his experiences, along with the challenges he faced, during his nearly year-long sail around the world.

She was a clerk and free lance writer for The Washington Post Style section from 1983-5. She then spent five years as a reporter and editor at the Vineyard Gazette on Martha’s Vineyard. In 1990 she became the arts editor at the Bennington Banner, in southern Vermont, where she met Rick Martell, a sailor who dreamt of cruising the tropics. Together, they pursued this dream, first as liveaboard owners of a schooner in Wickford, Rhode Island, while Elaine was a reporter and editor for The Providence Journal, and then, in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I, where Elaine was the features editor at the V.I. Daily News. In 1998 they returned to Rhode Island and Elaine was hired as an associate editor of Cruising World. Rick’s the the captain of Flyer, a 52-foot Swan; when they’re not working, together they sail Land’s End, their 1935 Crocker ketch, throughout New England waters.

John works with some of the best minds in the marine industry in order to convey vital maintenance, accessorizing and repair information to the boater. Each week, different projects, repair and/or improvements are addressed.

To round things out, Ship Shape TV occasionally features selected manufacturers’ facilities. Viewers are taken straight to the source to see how some products, which are manufactured on boaters’ behalf, are produced and created.

John’s PASSION FOR BOATING and his UPBEAT ABILITY TO TEACH are the qualities that make this show fun, exciting, entertaining and informative.
