Chartering a sailboat with Elaine Lembo
by Raymarine Inc., posted Mar 4th 2008 at 1:37AM
Elaine Lembo is the managing editor of Cruising World, and her career at the Sailing Company is the perfect culmination of a life’s pursuits—that of liveaboard sailor, crew of a luxury charter yacht, and newspaper journalist. She was a clerk and free lance writer for The Washington Post Style section from 1983-5. She then spent five years as a reporter and editor at the Vineyard Gazette on Martha’s Vineyard. In 1990 she became the arts editor at the Bennington Banner, in southern Vermont, where she met Rick Martell, a sailor who dreamt of cruising the tropics. Together, they pursued this dream, first as liveaboard owners of a schooner in Wickford, Rhode Island, while Elaine was a reporter and editor for The Providence Journal, and then, in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I, where Elaine was the features editor at the V.I. Daily News. In 1998 they returned to Rhode Island and Elaine was hired as an associate editor of Cruising World. Rick’s the the captain of Flyer, a 52-foot Swan; when they’re not working, together they sail Land’s End, their 1935 Crocker ketch, throughout New England waters.
